Which Spanish visa is right for you?
The route depends on how you earn and why you are moving. The Digital Nomad Visa, created under Spain’s Startup Act, suits remote employees and freelancers working mainly for clients outside Spain; it also opens the door to the favourable Beckham Law tax regime for many employees. The Non-Lucrative Visa fits retirees and the financially independent who will not work in Spain. Employees with a Spanish employer use a work visa, while EU citizens and their family members follow the simpler registration route.
Note that Spain’s investor “Golden Visa” closed to new applicants in April 2025, so property purchase no longer grants residency. If someone has told you otherwise, that advice is out of date — we build your plan around the routes that actually work today.
NIE, TIE and empadronamiento - the essentials
Almost every process in Spain runs through your NIE (foreigner identification number). Residents then obtain the physical TIE card, and register their address at the town hall (empadronamiento). We sequence these correctly so your visa, bank account and tax registration don’t stall waiting on each other.
Renewals, before they lapse
